One saying you might hear if you went to a kimono salon in Japan is that it takes over a thousand processes to create a single kimono. Japanese fine textiles exist thanks to generations of artisans dedicating their entire lives to mastering their craft—and often limiting themselves to a specific sub-specialty of their craft. The results are textiles that are revered around the world for their complex weave, evocative embroidery, expressive dye work, and more, usually in combination.
The beauty of this exhibition is obvious even to the casual viewer, but we challenge viewers to go beyond their overall impressions and take in the details. Each piece represents layers and layers of work by different people, and we feel that viewers can open themselves up to a completely new understanding of the concept of opulence as they delve deeper into the methodologies used to create each piece.
Why did the artisan decide to embroider that particular flower petal as opposed to the rest of the flowers? How many shades of ivory can be dyed into the wing of a crane? What happens when an artisan fills the forms of familiar shapes, such as clouds, with highly detailed stencil work? How did each artist create three-dimensional artwork on a two-dimensional surface intended to be draped over a three-dimensional body?
Please enjoy this exhibition and feel free to ask any staff member questions about the opulence you see here.
